Ontario Supporting the Revitalization of Downtowns & Main Streets

Province Helping Boost Tourism, Create Jobs, Enhance Economic Growth

Ontario is helping rural communities attract investment and tourism, create jobs and enhance regional economic growth by supporting the revitalization of downtown and main streets across the province.

Jeff Leal, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Minister Responsible for Small Business, made the announcement today at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association conference in Toronto.

Vibrant main streets help attract visitors, create jobs and increase the competitiveness of small businesses, which are the backbone of small, rural communities. That’s why the province is helping municipalities enhance and revitalize their downtown and main streets through improvements such as the installation of pedestrian crosswalks or landscaping. Municipalities can also direct funding to local businesses to improve the appearance of their storefronts by installing lighting or new signage.

The Windsor Wall: Fab art that also comes with a great hotel!

The first thing to catch our eye on entering the new TownePlace Suites by Marriott in Windsor is a fabulous, huge art installation by Ritsick Design Associates. The chain link mural represents the artistic and vibrant culture of Windsor. It sparkles with colour and the Windsor city scape pays homage to the city in a unique and playful way.  The city’s rich industrial, social and creative history is reflected in the use of the chain links.

Hotel G.M. Patrizia La Tona comments that guests often take selfies in front of the colourful piece.  If you visit, check it out up close.  It’s amazing.

The art sets the tone for this great new option for short or extended stays in downtown Windsor close to all the action.  Adventure Bay is almost next door, as is the riverfront and all it offers. Added to the great experiences of Windsor is the nearby tunnel to Detroit, recently named the hottest tourism spot in the U.S.  Really!  It’s great to see our friends at Tourism Windsor-Essex-Pelee Island collaborating with their colleagues across the river on “Two Nation Vacations”.  Paula Beach, Director of Sales for many Sunray properties in the region, values such support from TWEPI and SWOTC.
